Assessment & Homework

In the Reception class in the Pre-Prep, each boy's academic and personal development is carefully monitored and profiled. This profiling forms the basis of continuing assessment in Years 1 & 2. In the Prep School, there are end of year tests in main subjects in Years 3 & 4 and in Years 5 and above a programme of revision is followed and assessments held in each subject in the Trinity term. In this way, subject knowledge is consolidated, necessary skills are gradually assimilated and the boys become accustomed to the examination system as the normal end to a school year.

We believe that it is vital to foster independence in learning from an early age. Boys gradually take responsibility for some of their learning by undertaking little extension tasks at home. In the Pre-Prep, this consists of regular reading and learning of tables. From age 7, there is a 20-minute homework each evening. From age 9, there are two homeworks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and one piece of homework on Tuesdays and Thursdays; each homework takes about 30 minutes.
