Opera Trip
As part of their studies on Opera, Year 7 took a trip to the New Theatre to watch a performance of The Cunning Little Vixen as part of the 2019 touring season given by Welsh Nation Opera.
Written by Czech composer Leoš Janáček in 1921, the opera follows the life of a vixen and her companions, and the inevitable circle of life seen in a vibrant, enchanted forest. Soprano, Aoife Miskelly gave an excellent lead performance as the Vixen, as she demonstrated her technical mastery of the challenging vocal writing with poise and grace. The boys particularly enjoyed being sat within stone’s throw of a 70-piece live orchestra, whose fragments of folksong-inspired instrumental writing accompanied the vivid drama, singing and dancing on stage. This was an extremely memorable, and enjoyable experience for all the boys, which no doubt brought this historical genre to life.
