Mahler's Symphony no. 3
At the very end of Trinity, the NCS Chamber Choir and the ladies of the NCS Choral Society took part in a very special concert.
As part of a festival of concerts to mark the tenth anniversary of the Dobson organ at Merton College, the choirs mounted a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no.3, in collaboration with the choir of St. Christopher’s C of E Primary School, Cowley, and the girl choristers of Merton College. While Mahler’s symphony is primarily an instrumental work, there is a short but notoriously complex choral movement towards the end of the work, which requires a six-part female choir (Frauenchor), a two-part choir of boys’ voices (Knabenchor), and a mezzo-soprano soloists (Emma Roberts). But rather than employ a large symphony orchestra, the piece was played by the internationally renowned concert organist, David Briggs, in his own transcription for organ. The choirs worked extremely hard to learn the short but technically challenging chorus, and they gave a superb performance in the historic chapel of Merton College.
