Interest in the play has surged since the discovery of Richard’s body under a car park in 2012, with a number of ‘Ricardians’ working to rehabilitate his reputation. Shakespeare’s play, written in part to glorify the Tudor dynasty as represented by the Earl of Richmond (Henry VII at the end of the story), allows for no such subtlety. Every single senior boy was involved, and they were way beyond their years in portraying so movingly and dramatically the tale of Richard’s murderous ascent to the throne, then horseless defeat and death at the Battle of Bosworth.
