'Beowulf' Masterclass

Year 6 put on their armour, grabbed their swords and prepared to do battle with Grendel and his mother when they studied Beowulf in English lessons during Hilary term.
Not only did they consider the daring feats of this legendary hero, but they also put pen to paper themselves and crafted their own mythical tales of heroes and monsters. It was with great pleasure, therefore, that we welcomed Dr Eleanor Parker, Lecturer in Medieval English Literature at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, to talk to us over Zoom about her research on Beowulf and the appeal of this epic poem. Dr Parker was a fascinating speaker and Year 6 was a wonderful audience, eager to hear Dr Parker's views on what makes a good a monster, and what kind of challenges capture the reader's imagination.
